This paper analyzes how the Japanese people persisted with a consciousness of nationalism, recognizing and then
consuming the war, through visualized devices for entertainment, Sugoroku, and slideshows. After the initiation of the Sino-Japanese war, its nishiki-e were mass-produced and merchandised. The events, showing informational slides about the war, were held nationwide. Around the end of the major battles in December 1894, after the Sugoroku game was issued, adults and children could learn the amount of military expenditures and the size of the military forces of Japan and its opponent, and Japanese
soldiers, who contributed to the winning of the war, through the board game to provide indirect, virtual experiences of the war. Two entertainment devices, the individual, independent Sugoroku, and collective, compulsory slideshow events, transformed the war into an object of interest. The Sugoroku board game tried to justify the initiation of war by presenting images of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, the Battle of Pyongyang (1894) in an exaggerated way, the Emperor’s identification with the
nation, and modernized battleships and armed forces. While the slideshow events explained metaphors, not to be represented in one image, in writing, those were a direct, educational place to make an appeal in an emotional way such as “hooray for the Empire of Japan” and “hooray for the Emperor”. In conclusion, we found that, for the game of Sugoroku and the slideshow events based on the Sino-Japanese war, only imperial images chosen to unconsciously instill the war in the minds of the Japanese
people and, thus, had an impact on the enhancement of national consciousness through constant plays. 키워드열기/닫기 버튼, , , , , , Nisikie, Sugoroku, slideshow, game, education, the Sino-Japanese War 피인용 횟수
